Coach G Bio

Coach Donna Gelegonya graduated from Upper Merion High School in King of Prussia, PA in 1976.  While at Upper Merion, Coach G was a member of the Field Hockey Team (Captain), Swim Team, and Soccer Team.  On the swim team, would you believe, Coach G was a diver.

She completed her under-graduated work at Western Carolina University (WCU) in 1980 with a BS degree in Health and Physical Education and graduated magna cum laud.  At WCU Coach G participated in many intramural activities and played club Water Polo on an all male team.

After a number of years working for the Somerset Valley YMCA Coach G joined the Morris School District staff in 1992 as a Physical Education teacher (Swim Coach, Assistant Field Hockey Coach)

This is Coach G’s eighteenth season as the head boys’ and girls’ swim coach.  During those years she has obtained an overall girls record of 171-61-1.  Her girls teams have won:

  • 4 Conference Championships,
  • 7 Dual Meet Championships,
  • 1 Morris County Championship,
  • 7 State Sectional Finalists, and
  • 1 State Sectional Championship. 

She was named girls Morris Area swim coach of the year by the Daily Record in 1996 and by the Star Ledger in 2003.  Her girls’ teams were named Team of the Year in 1999 and 2000.  The National High School Coaches Association named Coach G the Girls North East Sectional Coach of the Year in 2009.

The boys’ teams have an overall record of 89-115-1.  Fifty-Seven of those wins have occurred during the last four years.  During her tenure the boys’ teams have won:

  • 1 Conference Championship,
  • 1 Dual Meet Championship,
  • 1 Morris County Championship,
  • 1 State Sectional Championship, and
  • 1 State Finalist.

The Star Ledger named her the New Jersey State Boys Coach of the year in 2009.

Coach G lives with her husband Ron in Hunterdon County.  She has two children (Bruce and Shon) and four step-children (Ronnie, Brian, Dustin, Tanor).


Coach Bobby Bio

Coach Bobby Sparano graduated from Morristown High School, NJ in 2001.  While at Morristown, Coach Bobby was a member of the cross country, indoor track, swim team, and the outdoor track team.

Bobby completed his under-graduate work at West Virginia University (WVU) in 2006 with a BS degree in Physical Education and a BS degree in Health Education. He also received a minor in athletic coaching.  At WVU Bobby competed on the outdoor track team for his freshman year running the 800 meter event.

Bobby joined the Morris School District in 2006 two weeks before graduating college. He taught Physical Education at Sussex Elementary School for 3 years. Bobby then moved up to the Frelinghuysen Middle School where you can find him today.

This is bobby’s 4th year as an assistant coach for the Morristown High School swim team. In that time bobby has coached the boy’s team to a record of 50-6-1 and the girls to a record of 37-9.

The boys have won:

  • 1 County Championship
  • 1 Conference Championships
  • 1 Dual Meet Championships
  • 1 State Sectional Championship
  • 1 State Finalist

The girls have won:

  • 1 Conference Championship
  • 2 Dual Meet Championships

Some interesting facts about bobby are that he swam for Coach G himself for two years when he was in high school. Bobby swam the 50 free style and the 100 back stroke for the colonials.  Bobby has won 3 state titles as a runner when he was in high school; he went to the National Championship with his 4 x 800 team and was also invited to run at Penn Relays in the Championship of America 4 x 800 relay race. Bobby has now coached a team to a state championship bringing his number to 4 state rings. Bobby lives with his wife Kate and puppy Ivy in Denville, NJ. 

Coach Maggie Singler Bio

Coach Maggie Singler graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ in 1997. While at Columbia High School, Maggie was a member of the swim and field hockey teams. Maggie led both her swim and field hockey teams in 1995 and 1996 to win the sectional championship.  As a member of the swim team Maggie held team records in the 50, 100, 200 free, 100 fly, 100 back 200 medley relay and 200 and 400 free relay.  Maggie held the  Essex County title in the 50 free (3 years), 100 fly (2 years), 100 fly, and 200 free relay (4 years).  In the Iron Hills Conference Maggie also held the title in the 50 free (2 years) and 100 free.  Maggie is also the 4th time highest scorer in Columbia Field hockey with 31 goals and 11 assists, making 1st team All-Essex County, All- Iron Hills Conference in 1995 & 1996 and 2nd team all State in 1996.

In 2001 Maggie completed her undergraduate work at Providence College in Providence, RI.  She received a BA in Elementary/Special Education.  Maggie was also a 4-year starter as a Lady Friar on the PC swim team.  Maggie specialized in fly and back in college and was a 4-year Big East and ECAC qualifier.  Maggie was the captain of her swim team and received the Coach’s Award in 2001.

Maggie is currently employed as a Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant in Rahway, NJ.  Maggie received her MA from Farleigh Dickinson University in Learning Disabilities in 2007.  In May of 2011, Maggie will receive her 2nd Masters degree from Seton Hall University in Management, Leadership and Policy.

This is Maggie’s 7th season with the Morristown Swim Team.

In addition to swimming, Maggie also coaches field hockey at Columbia High School.  Maggie received the title of Essex County Coach of the year in 2010.   Maggie will be inducted this May 2011 into the Columbia High School Athletic Hall of Fame as the 1st female swimmer.

Maggie currently lives in Hoboken, NJ where she participates in an adult kickball and dodge ball league.  Maggie also swims on a Master’s team in Hoboken and holds three NJ Master’s records in the 50 fly.
