Fundraising Summary
2/16/2010 9:02am [Note: e-mail was editted to remove specific dollar amounts]

I apologize for not sending this out sooner but I wanted to let you know about our great fundraising season.

A great benefit to having our own pool is that we get to host the large conference meets.  Although the big meets are a great deal of time and work, they also give us the opportunity to raise some great money.  The money we raise each year helps defray the costs related to our end of season banquet, the Thanksgiving and Holiday breakfasts, supplies for pasta party activities, various gifts and miscellaneous expenses that occur throughout the season.  We have also contributed to the new record board.  Last year, due to the great past fundraising efforts, the Swim Boosters were able to gift a complete renovation of the Pool Office.  The office is seen and used by coaches and officials from almost every school at the large conference and county meets.   It had not been touched in 18 years and needed a serious update.  At times, the Swim Boosters have also been able to contribute to other scholarship opportunities for our graduating seniors such as one time scholarships for swimmers who break records, matching other scholarships available to our seniors etc.  This has allowed more of our swimmers to be recognized for their efforts during their time at MHS.

Here are some of the highlights of this year’s fundraising efforts:

The Morristown HS Swim Team is known for their pasta with “Coach G’s” sauce and the rest of the Concession Stand items.  This year, we raised money thru the Concession Stand.

This was the second year we collected “dues”.  Dues were $10 per family and it helped us fund the concession start up expenses.  Next year, we hope to have 100% participation.

This year, thru the generosity of three vendors – Lovey’s, Primaveras (Dine In/Take Out nights) & California Beach Hut (setting up their tables at the conference meets) we raised additonal money.

Spirit Ads, the ads you saw in the programs at each of the conference meets, brought in funds.  Remember: when you buy an ad, it is published in each of the three meet programs.

The above does not include donations resulting from the annual Van Laskos Memorial Swim-a-thon.  We have collected money in pledges and they are still coming in.  As you know, the Swim-a-thon supports a one-time scholarship for a Senior Swimmer.  We are very proud to say that our past fund raising efforts have made this the largest scholarship offered at Morristown High School.

As you can see, every little bit helps and makes a difference!  I would like to offer a special thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s fundraising efforts for the swim team so successful!

Our last fundraising effort of the year is the basket raffle at our banquet.  It is being coordinated by Marisa Poling (jmpoling@optonline.net) and Jean Viotto (jjavnj@cs.com).  It is a fun way to help raise money for our team.  You can participate by donating a basket, items to create a basket and by participating in the actual raffle at the banquet.

REMEMBER:  The Swim Team Banquet is Sunday, April 25th from 11:30 to 3:30pm.  The reservation form will be sent out in early March!

Thanks again,

Anne Kostyak

Girls A meet/Boys A Meet
2/3/2010 8:21pm

Please find the volunteer chart for the Girls A Meet on Friday.  As you can see we are short many volunteers. Please take a look and see if there is any time you can offer us.  It does not need to be an entire shift if that does not work for you.  We appreciate any time you can give us.  It has been a long season and we know that parents have donated both time and food on several occasions.  This is the final request for help with meets.....  (Please know I am cheering about that too!)
Current list of volunteers and open positions (Download Microsoft Word or PDF)

If there is any way you can help with volunteering please email Maria Cataldo at swimparentvolunteers@yahoo.com

If you can help with donations of pasta please email Sophia Bacas at sophia@jcbacas.com

If you can provide baked goods, fruit or bagels please email Kerry Manning at bresman5@optonline.net

There is talk of snow Friday into Saturday.  There have been no definite plans made for alternates but there is a possibility that the girls meet may start earlier and that the boys meet might be postponed until Sunday if necessary.  NONE OF THESE ARE DEFINITE CHANGES.  PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR SWIMMER TO CAREFULLY LISTEN TO THE INFORMATION COACH G TELLS THEM EACH DAY.  AS ALWAYS COACH G IS THE BEST SOURCE  FOR INFORMATION ABOUT PRACTICE TIMES, SWIM MEET TIMES, BUSES  ETC

As always I thank you for your dedication to our swim team.  The booster program would not be successful without the fantastic parent involvement we have come to rely on.

Barbara Miller

Congrats/Thanks/Girls Conference Meet/senior meet/a note about practice schedules
1/31/2010 11:10pm

Hello everyone,

There is a lot of information in this email.  Please be sure to read all the way to the end.

Congratulations to all of our swimmers.  They did an excellent job in the meet on Saturday.  I know that some swimmers had extraordinary accomplishments and I want to acknowledge them here but I am waiting for Coach G to pass the specifics along to me so I don't miss anyone.  Look for another note on this subject very soon.

Many thanks to everyone who helped with the County meet yesterday either by donating or giving your time or, in many cases both!  We also appreciate the many people who volunteered to fill 2 and 3 shifts.  Your generosity is what makes our booster club so successful.  Thanks also to the Freshman parents for hosting a great pasta party Friday night.  Everything went very smoothly and I think the swimmers had a great time.

We have one more meet to host this Friday.  It is the Super Conference A Meet for Girls.  Although we have always hosted the "A" meet this year it is much larger due to the change in conference.  The entries will not be complete until Tuesday but we need to begin to organize volunteers to be sure we have enough help.  Coach G told us to plan for a meet as long as the County meet.  Although we will have a much smaller number of swimmers and they will all be girls, please remember that the fundraising done at these meets benefits all swimmers equally.  We use the money to pay for things such as pasta party activities, senior meet/reception supplies and most importantly the end of year banquet.  We are aware that Friday afternoon and evening may be tough for some people but we hope you can volunteer whatever time you can.  We need between 8-10 volunteers at a time for at least the first 4-5 hours (beginning prior to meet start--exact time TBA).  If you can help please email Maria Cataldo at
swimparentvolunteers@yahoo.com.   Let her know when you will be available and for how long.  Ideally we need volunteers for a minimum of 2 hours.  Maria will try to fit people in where we need them.  We are going to reserve some seats for parent volunteers to share so that we can watch our girls swim (we can rotate in and out as we need to).  We will eliminate the need to stand on your tip toes at the back of the balcony.

We will also be asking for donations for the concession stand.  The requests will be similar to what we have used for the "B" meet and the county meet.  If you already know you can donate fruit, bagels or baked goods please email Kerry Manning bresman5@optonline.net to let her know.  We will be limiting donations in different categories to reduce waste at the end of the night so Kerry may ask you for something else if that "category" is full.  If you can donate cooked, tubular shaped pasta sealed in plastic bags please email Sophia Bacas at Sophia@jcbacas.com and let her know how much you will be donating.   If you are not sure what to donate please look for a donation list we will send out tomorrow.

Tomorrow is our annual Senior Meet when we take the opportunity to honor our graduating seniors in a short ceremony during the break in the meet.  Senior swimmers and their parents then attend a reception with Coach G and the coaching staff.  Thanks so much to Terri Alvarado, Lidia Minella, Krissi Ashton, Allison Arakelian and the junior class for hosting this event.

The final note for tonight is a clarification about practice schedules and communication via this email/website.  At times we have communicated changes in practices and schedules through these channels and it may have led you to believe that the booster club is somehow involved in those decisions.  Unfortunately I can only communicate information passed on to me from Coach G.  As circumstances at school seem to change regularly it is very difficult for Coach to send all of that information to me.  Daily changes in practice times are communicated to the swimmers by Coach and your swimmer will have to be the primary means of receiving that information.  If you are confused I encourage you to ask your child what they know and if you are still confused, the most reliable source of this information is Coach G.

Thanks for everything you do,
Barbara Miller
(for the Morristown Swimming Booster  Club)

HELP STILL NEEDED AT COUNTY MEET/donations
1/26/2010 6:47pm

We are still in need of quite a few volunteers for Saturday's meet.

PLEASE DON'T ASSUME SOMEONE ELSE WILL DO IT BECAUSE THERE ARE NOT THAT MANY "SOMEONE ELSES"!  It really is necessary for everyone to volunteer at 2 of the 3 big meets we are hosting.  Please look below and see what time you may be available to help..even if your time does not coincide with one of the shifts....we can accommodate you....we just need your help.  These meets can not happen successfully without you.  Please let MARIA CATALDO  swimparentvolunteers@yahoo.com know when you can help.

Attention Swimmers!!

Just a reminder that this Friday, January 22nd from 3:00 to 5:00pm is the Swim Team's annual Swim a Thon.  I have attached copies of the cover letter and pledge sheet for those of you who have not received one.

Although the Swim a Thon is mandatory and held in place of practice, we are hoping everyone is able to collect at least one sponsor.  Please have checks made out to MHS Swim Boosters, with Van Laskos in the "memo" line.

There will be a pizza dinner held directly after the swim a thon - starting at 5:15pm.  I need a headcount to order the pizza so please respond to me by Wednesday afternoon if you are planning on staying for pizza.  If I don't hear from you, I will assume you are not coming/don't plan on having pizza.

Another chance to order MHS Swim Clothing
1/18/2010 1:21pm

Did you miss out on ordering swim clothing last time? Here's your chance to get sweatpants or a hoodie with or without a name added on the back. We need to meet a required minimum order, so we are checking interest at this point to see if we have enough to place an order. Please email Shari Ramirez at teekadee2@hotmail.com by January 24th and let her know if you are interested in ordering sweatpants $20 (either tradtional style maroon or grey with the open leg) or a maroon hoodie sweatshirt $25 or $28 with name on back. At that point, she will let you know if there is enough interest and will collect the money before ordering. There are still water bottles available for $10, as well as a limited number of hats for $15 and long sleeve tshirts for $15. We will not be reordering these items until next year, just sweatpants and hoodies."

MHS Swimming News

Congratulations to all of the swimmers who swam in the B meet yesterday.  The results can be seen on the website www.mhscst.org.

THANK YOU to Donna Goldstein and the sophomore parents for hosting a fabulous pasta party on Friday night.

THANK YOU to all the parents who volunteered at the meet yesterday and for all of the generous donations of food to sell at the concession stand.  The day would not have been so successful without your support.  Thanks especially to Sophia Bacas, Maureen Byrne and Anne Kostyak who remained at the meet from beginning to end......that was a long day!  Thanks also to Shari Ramirez for coordinating the clothing sales and staying the entire afternoon and evening, Kerry Manning for coordinating the sale of baked goods and fruit, Deenah Lopinto for purchasing the awards for swimmers and for coordinating the fundraising opportunity with California Beach Hut and Joe Murphy for being the "go to" guy all morning long!  I know there are many, many other parents who provided assistance that we could not have done without.  Thank you to all of you!

NOW on to a busy week for our swimmers!

Practice is scheduled for 10-12 tomorrow (Monday) morning.  In case of inclement weather check your email, the website or be alert for a call from the phone chain.  I have received emails from a number of people who were not on the phone chain. Spirit Ads/Volunteers for B meet
1/9/2010 11:26am

Hello everyone,
The Spirit Ad deadline has been extended until Wednesday, January 13th.  Please consider purchasing one to support your swimmer or the team OR ask a local business to advertise in our program.  It will be seen by all high school swimmers in our conference (Morris and Sussex county) as well as ALL high school swim teams in Morris County.  All paperwork is available on the website   www.mhscst.org

The B meet championship meet is at MHS on Saturday, January 16th.  At this time there are 19 girls teams and 17 boys teams registered to participate.  We will run it as two different meets with the girls' meet in the morning and the boys' meet in the afternoon.  It will be a long day with Saturday morning set up starting at 7:30 and clean-up starting somewhere between 6:00-8:00 pm.
We will also be setting up some tables and concession supplies on Friday afternoon.  As you can imagine this will require many volunteers.  THIS EMAIL IS REQUESTING VOLUNTEERS ONLY. THERE WILL BE ANOTHER EMAIL LATER TODAY REQUESTING DONATIONS FOR THE CONCESSION STAND.

One important change for this year is that this is not a conference meet it is an invitational meet hosted by Morristown High School.  The benefit of this is that the swim boosters receive all proceeds from the meet but we are also responsible for all of the expenses.  All swimmers benefit from the activities of the booster club no matter what level they are swimming on the team and we need ALL parents to volunteer.  Booster money supports pasta party activities, the swim banquet, scholarship funds and gifts to the school/swim program (such as the record board and Coach G's office improvement last year).  You will need to volunteer your time during at least 2 of the championship meets whether your child is swimming or not.  We will always make sure you are available to see you child swim.

Please review the list below and RSVP to this email address to tell me where you can help by Tuesday, January 12th.  As it is a long day and I know WE ALL have obligations other places but I need everyone to consider helping at some point on the 16th.

Swim for Food
1/9/2010 10:53am

Randolph High School Swim team has challenged us to a "food drive contest".  We will see which team can collect the most non-perishable food by our meet against Randolph on January 20th.

Collection boxes will be in the balcony along the back wall until then.  The food will be donated to a local food bank.

SWIM MEET Tuesday at 5:30 pm at MHS
1/9/2010 10:26am

There will be a varsity swim meet against Fanwood-Scotch Plains on Tuesday, January 12th at 5:30 pm.

AN EMAIL ABOUT B MEET VOLUNTEERS AND DONATIONS WILL BE COMING LATER TODAY.  PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL AND RESPOND ASAP. THE MEET IS IN ONE WEEK AND IS LARGER THAN WE HAVE EVER HAD.  WE WILL NEED LOTS OF HELP ALL DAY LONG.

Help for B meet
1/6/2010 9:41pm

Hello everyone,

The B meet will be longer with more swimmers than we have ever had before.  I was hoping to get some additional "coordinators" to help with the organization.

Sophia Bacas is handling pasta sales.
Maureen Byrne and Ann Goss are handling concession sales of candy, snacks and drinks.
Shari Ramirez is coordinating clothing and water bottle sales.

It would be great to have another volunteer to handle donations of baked goods, bagels and fresh fruit.  The responsibilities would include acting as the contact person to keep track of donations to be sure we have enough at each of the big meets.  (1/16, 1/30 and 2/5)  I would send out emails asking for donations and give your contact information for responses.

In addition it would be great if we could have a volunteer for each meet to be a "meet coordinator".  Actually the "B" meet would have a girls coordinator (morning) and a boys coordinator (afternoon).  Responsibilities would include checking with concession volunteers to be sure we have enough supplies and coverage, filling in when a volunteer leaves to watch their swimmer, checking in with Coach G to see if she needs anything (periodically coaches and officials need drinks/refreshments).  Basically you need to be at the meet and available if  something comes up.

If you can help with any of these things please let me know.
Thanks,
Barbara

Swim-a-thon
1/5/2010 7:44pm

Morristown High School
Swim-a-Thon
Friday, January 22, 2010
3pm-5pm

This year’s Swim-a-Thon will take place on Friday, January 22, 2010 at 3pm at Morristown High School. The money raised will be placed in the Van Laskos Memorial Scholarship Fund.

For those of you who did not know Van, he was a member of our swim team.  He was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocyte Leukemia in July of 2003 at the age of 16. Van was a remarkable young man who inspired all of us who knew him to embrace the challenges that life places before us. He was a dedicated selfless swimmer with compassion and respect for his fellow team members.  He lost his battle on March 12, 2005.

The honor of this scholarship will be awarded to a senior swim team member who best embodies Van’s spirit and qualities.

Each swimmer will receive a pledge sheet and are asked to get donations from family, businesses or neighbors prior to swimming.  Swimmers will either get pledges and money prior to swimming or following the swim-a-thon.  Checks are to be made out to:  Morristown High School Swim Team Boosters (please write Van Laskos in the ‘memo’ area on your check).

Swimmers will have two hours to swim their laps with a maximum of 200 laps.

Please come out and support your children that day. Everyone has a wonderful time.   If you need any additional information, please contact:  Donna Gelegonya, MHS Swim Team Coach at 973-292-2000 X 2156.

Thank you very much in advance for your support.

Anne Kostyak

There are quite a few announcements to follow.  Please read all the way through to the end to be sure you don't miss any important information.

Clothing orders are in and Mrs. Lopinto and Mrs. Cataldo will be distributing them on Friday at the end of time trials or Monday before practice.

Please do not bring anything valuable to school and into the locker room.  Be sure to write your name in everything and lock your things up.

Coach G has scheduled two JV meets.
December 16 vs Par. Hills at home (varsity away)
December 21 vs. Par High at home (varsity away)

Coach is in the process of arranging 2 more JV meets.  The times and dates will be announced as soon as they become available.

Note from Coach G re meet 12/1

Below is a tentative travel team list for  the meet against Montville on Tuesday Dec. 1st.  It may change slightly based on Friday's time trails.  The swimmers with * next to their names may or may not swim - I'm going to try to get everyone else in.

All other swimmers will be practicing from 3:30 -5:15.  Meet Coach Maggie by the pool doors.  Dryland clothes will not be needed.  This is a great opportunity for our novice swimmers to get extra water time and attention.

Spirit Ads

Please see attached email about Spirit Ads below.

Dear Parents,

This past week I gave out information to the swim team about the Spirit Ad fundraiser.  They were all asked to participate in selling these ads, since the money raised benefits them all directly.  I offered a small incentive program to get them motivated.  My goal with this is to have them be responsible for the fundraiser and not the parents!  Though any help would be wonderful!  Thank you as usual for your support.  If any questions please feel free to contact me-my e/m is rngrather@aol.com .The dead line for the Ads is 1/6/10!
Thank You

For questions please email Shari Ramirez at  teekadee2@hotmail.com.

Thanks,

Subject: Swim Clothing Orders

Just a reminder...orders for swim clothing are due this Friday, October 30th. Please send them in to the swim office in an envelope marked "swim clothing". The forms and pricing are on the website. If you have any questions, please email Shari Ramirez at teekadee2@hotmail.com .

The orders will be distributed to the swimmers at practice when they come in, hopefully before the first meet. If there is an item you would like to order as a surprise for a birthday or the holidays, let Shari know and the item can be distributed separately.

There is one change to the order form however...the sweatpants cannot be ordered in maroon without the elastic, so we are now offering BOTH of the following:

maroon sweatpants with elastic bottoms (traditional sweatpants) AND grey sweatpants without elastic bottoms (hemmed legs).

Please indicate which you prefer on the order form!

Subject: Swim Booster Information

Hello everyone,
I hope you got a chance to look at the website.  Mike Swift is working daily to update information and add new features.  Please use this as your first source of information regarding swim team activities.

If you did not pay your dues last week please mail them to:
Anne Kostyak
6 Crescent Drive, Morristown, NJ  07960
The dues are $10 per family.

Clothing order forms are posted on the website.  The deadline for orders is October 30th.

Thank you to Paula Grather for offering to coordinate the Spirit Ads.  Look for a new flyer created by Mike Swift to be posted on the website.  Paula is coordinating this but ALL parents can solicit advertisers.

Thank you to Marisa Poling for offering to host the Parent Social, a new booster club activity.  Details to follow.

We are still looking for a parent to coordinate the Senior Meet and Reception.  Traditionally this has been a junior parent.  Remember...next year it will be your swimmer who is a senior.

Senior parents: Please look for information regarding the Senior Social coming from Sue Cortley soon.

All parents: Please look for information about the Colonial Relays also coming soon.

Subject: A few notes

Hi everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to give us your email.  Just a few notes from the meeting the other night:

We are still looking for a parent to coordinate the Spirit Ads.  Spirit Ads are boosters in the programs for the championship meets.  They can be full page, half page, quarter page and single line ads or messages.  They run in ALL championship programs.

If you did not pay your dues the other night please send them in.  This will be the "start-up" money for concessions for Colonial Relays and activities for the Senior Social on November 21.

Here is the link to our new website.  We will also be forwarding on-line sign-ups for events such as concession volunteers, chaperones and pasta party donations.

Thanks,
Barbara
